I started writing a kit list and managed to get to 10 pages!!!! I have narrowed this down to three pages and will have to put a limit to size of backpack etc. I am not sure it will all fit in the back! However it got me thinking off roof rack and the pro's and cons of fitting one. Anyone any input for and against? Ta!

Good question.
I sugest that ye write smaller that way it willnae look as much and save on trees.

Anyways, roof rack?
I use one.
I haiv a halfords roof box thingy.
A god send on last years rally.
The tent was at the edge so first oot, then the bed area, bed, etc etc.
All in order of use.
That was ace when it was wet on arival at the camp site.
We also kept bottled water up ther oot the way.

I will be using it again this year.

Personally I think that the extra fuel used was worth it for ease of set up at the camp sites.

I also take one of me rear seats oot and replace it with a fridge.
Luxury of a Landie Guinness

Is the roof console precut to fit the headlining or do you have to trim it follow the contour of the roof?

I'm hoping the second so I can get one for my project car Very Happy

Nope it just sits over the top of the lining.

You'll need to cut about 10cm (ish) off of both visors.

But........excited about this company!!
Have a look at Raptor Engineering,There site they're new and make a gorgeous centre console for defenders. They're now in the process of creating their own roof console too.

These things always happen just AFTER i've bought the expensive kit!! grrrr

P.S
If you go with the roof console that I have you're restricted on the CB size.

Only units that are around 140mm deep or less will fit. (as I found out with my CB)

No, I still haven't got around to earthing the antenna.
Everything's connected up ok though.
Do you have an SWR meter?

SWR Meter!! Laughing

Once it's all put together you plug the meter in between the CB and patch lead to see how you signal is.

If it's not too great you may need to cut bits off of your antenna.

Standing Wave Ratio

It is the amount of transmitted signal that is reflected back down from your aerial if it is not matched to your radio.

Ideally your twig should be a perfect fraction of 11 metres (half, quarter etc.) SWR between 1:1 and 1.5:1 is acceptable. 1.6:1 to 3:1 is usable but will affect the distance of your transmission. Over 3 and you risk popping the power output transistor in the rig.

SWR does not affect reception.

Steve, there's an interesting thread one of the forums I'm on about KL71's.

Something I'd not even thought of. They're a directional tyre so which side do you plan on getting a flat on mate? lol

If you get a flat on the other side your tyre will be back to front.

Not sure if it will make a great deal of difference on the road unless it's very wet.

Something else that's just been discussed on the L200 forum is that the KL71s hvae a habit of wearing the leading edge of the tread block if used a lot on road.
One guy reported them being "cr4p" off road after only 10K or so because the road use had battered them.

Have you ever tried driving with a directional tyre fitted the wrong way round Re: Vehicle rally prep - Page 2 Icon_evil
