| Well, the saga continues with the engine replacement. Last week the replacement low milage (18,500 miles) engine turned up - only been waiting for 3 weeks for it's delivery !!! The borrowed engine came out on Bank Holiday Monday and the replacement dropped into place. Just needs bolting in and the wiring/plumbing connecting up - that's today's job. Test drive will be to Asda Aintree in the morning to spend the weekend collecting. How many weeks to go to the start ...... nothing like leaving it to the last minute, although I think Wal might be doing better at that than me !!! Then we need to strip all the current sponsors stickers and have a revamp, along with a whole list of other jobs to do. Because I work away from home during the week, I effectively have 10 days now (including the Mon/Tues Bank Hols in June) for any prep work This engine had better be good !!!!!! | |

| Friend of mine, who is a repair shop owner(admittedly VW Audi) owns a L200 which he uses for work. Now on its fourth head rebuild in 6 months also having had a bottom end rebuild. He keeps saying 'why did I change my 110 double cab for this" | |

He keeps saying 'why did I change my 110 double cab for this" Is that because the heads are cracking, or that the gasket keeps going? Some of the earlier cd workshop manuals are confusing in terms of type of head gasket (steel or composite) and the torque the bolts should be tightened to.

| I think it's the gaskets that are the current problem(s) although I know he has had at least 1 cracked head. It's on a 05 plate | |

| Nick,
Best you stick it in a nice warm garage untill mid june just in case......
It's not like the AA boys need anymore bonus points for engine rebuilds in foreign campsites

If he's been using composite gaskets and the recommended torque settings for them, that will explain it. Even the steel gaskets will go if the earlier cd settings are used (angular settings, rather than actual torque figures). I've done a few, using the steel gasket from Milners, torqued, in stages to 120nm and never had a problem. There are 3 different thickness gaskets (to make allowances for piston protrusion) from Mits, but Milners only sell the thicker one. Even my local dealer now recommends only the thicker of the 3. Cracked head is nearly always the result of overheating, sometime caused by a leaking EGR cooler allowing exhaust gases into the cooloing water, other times by a leaking head gasket often caused by the problem described above.

It's not like the AA boys need anymore bonus points for engine rebuilds in foreign campsites Think I need to go and sit in a nice warm dark garage until 15th June. I need to get some miles under it's belt before June, to make sure it's OK. It now transpires that it was "stripped to check it over" before sending it to me. Not what I wanted to hear about a 18.5K engine that come out of a 57 plate truck !!!
