Try a Google search for a programme called Fast File Undelete.

It doesn't get them all, but it does a pretty good job of recovering deleted files.

A good tip is to intall any undelete programs onto a different sector of your hard drive - otherwise the very act of installation may overwrite some of the data you're looking to save.

Sorted.
Disk Digger to the rescue, guess it's been about 99% effective.

Teach me rationalise a pc, a laptop and a back up drive - I knew I should have done a fresh back up of each before embarking on a tidy up !!!!!

I've got so many back up drives and not one of them mirrors the content of another. So far have managed to recover data each time I've lost a drive with a bit of geektech but really REALLY need to get my act together......
