| OK, so ..... most of us will have GPS of one sort or another, so recovering from getting lost, should be easy. But, which European map book would be the best to get? Amazon have a good selection. I already have some Michelin and other publishers large scale maps, but guessing which ones to get to cover the whole route, might get a bit expesive. | |

| The question has been asked so here’s an answer:
As part of our planning we’ve used, and took with us on the reconnaissance;
• Michelin France 2010 1:200000 A4 spiral atlas ISBN 978-2-06-714878-9 • Michelin Benelux & North France 1:200000 A4 spiral atlas ISBN 978-2-06-714294-7 • Marco Polo Regional Map 1:200000 Baden-Wurttemberg ISBN 978-3-8297-4011-1 • Marco Polo Regional Map 1:200000 South Bavaria ISBN 978-3-8297-4013-5
Note; we are NOT saying you need the above – we merely inform you in this post of the mapping we’ve used. Sorry guys ‘ n gals – no special deals on the main mapping.
We anticipate that an AA European Atlas will form part of the ‘rally pack’ for each team at signing on.
As ever, for convenience and safety, we continue to emphasise and suggest that all the teams have a Sat Nav with European mapping thereon.

| Thanks Keith. Think I'll update to new versions of the Michelin maps. Always found them good everywhere I've been across Europe. Together with the AA Atlas, that should do it for paper mapping. Just need to fiqure out a way of pre planning some Geocaching along the way | |

| Ross - No they don't cover Germany.
Holland, Belgium & Luxembourg are covered the Michelin 'Benelux & North France' 1:200000 A4 spiral atlas ISBN 978-2-06-714294-7
All the maps the organisers used in their planning are listed in Para 6.5 of the Final Instructions - however it is up to individual crews for them to decide what maps, if any, they want to get.
Maps will not be issued by the organisers. Crews will be given roadbooks or other information to allow them to reach the relevant destinations - the maps themselves may be useful as a back-up but won't form part of the navigation
Hope this helps.

Now .......... that's a whole different tin of worms. Basically, in some countries it's illegal to use ANYTHING that warns of speed cameras, traps etc... even if it is a non-live database stored on the satnav. Conviscation is the penalty, as well as, maybe, a roadside fine. On the subject of roadside fines - don't forget that it is just that - you must be able to pay on the spot, argue and the penalty will increase. If you don't have the means to pay on the spot, you can be escorted to the nearest cash machine to produce the fine. Make sure you get a receipt for any cash panalty paid.

Nick, you seem quite the expert! (won't ask why :-p) I've been reading on the AA website and they're saying it only applies to radar type devices and not the static speed camera alert, the reasoning is apparently because static camera locations are public knowledge anyway due to the freedom of information act making all the locations public knowledge anyway!? Problem I'm facing is my only computer has died and so I'm unable to uninstall the cameras at the moment, I obviously do not want to get caught or fined so any knowledge you have greatly appreciated matie D

I use it all the time and it's fab, hope it does a good job for you Watch this one - I've been running it on and off for the last couple weeks. Took me a few days to realise it still runs the GPS location service, even when it's shut down, therefore using battery power. So you need to go into "settings", "general", "location services" and shut it off to preserve battery power if you're away from a power source etc... for any length of time. It depleted my Iphone 4 battery by nearly 80% in 6 hours over night, when the 'phone was virtually completely shut down. While you're in location services, look for anything that has a the little "triangle" gps symbol showing - it means that the location service is always on. One, for example is the built in camera, but it doesn't actually run, if the app is shut down properly, unlike Mobile Maps does.

I forgot it does that - actually how do I change on iphone 3? It didn't used to stay on but I must have changed my settings unbeknowingly!

| If the 3 is the same as the 4:
Go into "settings", "general", "location services", scroll down to find Mobile Maps and just switch off the location service for that app.
