| Nick - You know you can't pull the wool over the organisers' eyes. Who said the recce had been done using vehicles! There are other methodologies available. You've wasted your investment in the PIs Incidentally, the recce confirmed Richie's fear of heights - he made a bit of a mess in the Lithuanian powered hang glider but it seems it cleaned up okay (which is more than can be said of Richie’s apparel). | |

| Good point Nick - On reflection Richie mentioned that the flight was a 'little uncomfortable' | |

All trucks of the LRDG were equipped with the Bagnold sun compass and some trucks were also equipped with a P8 Tank Compass. Each patrol had a navigator, he was equipped with a theodolite and astronomical position tables to plot star sightings with. LRDG radio operators had the duty of constantly monitoring BBC's time signals to navigate accurately with the sun compass.

In fact, probably better than MemoryMap. On Skibums recommendation, I've just started using ViewRanger on the iPhone/ipad.
It rules! Much better than Memory Map Back on topic! In what way is it better... Interested in view ranger but have always used MM

| I've used Memory Map since 2000. I had the Adventurer SATNAV with 1:50,000 mapping on it, it was a great system in its time but Memory Map discontinued the device and have not upgraded the way Memory Map works on the internet. Maps were expensive and took huge mounts of space to store. I've tried to use the iPhone Memory Map app but i found it expensive and hard work to use, sharing pre owned maps was difficult between devices. With the advent of iPhone, iPad and Android platforms, i can combine 3 or more electronic devices with one item, I find it makes life easier for charging and device management. I have the same maps on my iPhone and iPad, following mapping in an iPad is a revelation, I use it for greenlaning, life is very easy using it. I find ViewRanger and easier and more intuitive to use both on the device and on the computer. One of the really good features is the ability to share routes between friends, publish the route on My ViewRanger and your friends can download the route and follow it as they wish. They also have a much larger range of world wide mapping to use. I've approached ViewRanger to sponsor the 2012 event, they have offered a 20% discount on mapping WEB SHOP DISCOUNT CODE ON ANY MAPS PURCHASED BY EVENT PARTICIPANTS. NOT APPLICABLE ON DEVICE BUNDLES. NOTE: THIS DISCOUNT CODE IS ONLY VALID VIA OUR WEB SHOP AT http://shop.viewranger.com/ – NOT VIA APP STORES OR IN-APP PURCHASES PM me for the discount code | |

| It's a shame it doesn't appear to be available for PC.
A bit old fashioned I know, but I have a Panasonic Toughbook which served us well in 2010 and it's 'Bullet Proof'. Ideal for laning and has been dropped in puddles and deep mud in the past. Just hose it down and away it goes again.

Besides, Jeep owners know everything and never need maps so shouldn't need to nav?????

Yes, I use one I bought from Maplins for about £20. Seems OK and worked well even in the Bavarian Alps - Sandy wrote:

Need it sometimes to find broken down land rovers....
