- THIS MONTH:
Land Rover, probably Britain’s most successful vehicle manufacturer is struggling to keep going and fund new model programmes because the banks, so recently bailed out by the Government, won’t provide it with the liquidity it needs.
Land Rover isn’t begging for a government hand out but I’m willing to bet an order for a few thousand Defender military vehicles, like the TD4 FFR on display at DVD 2009 wouldn’t go amiss at Solihull. And that the soldiers on the ground would much rather be driving around in new, more powerful vehicles than vehicles a quarter of a century old that have had little more than the dents knocked out and a re-spray.
And the MoD could always get a £2000 back from the Government’s scrappage allowance.
While we’re on the subject, we’ve heard about an event happening next year to support the charity ‘Help for Heroes’ which is providing millions of pounds in facilities and support for those wounded in combat. This includes not only the obvious physical injuries but teaching techniques to conquer unseen mental wounds. Keith Bowen, a former law enforcement officer with experience in Bosnia and his son, Tim, are organising a 10-day, 1600-mile rally for 4 x 4 vehicles in June 2010 in support of ‘Help for Heroes’. You can get more details at www.h4rally.co.uk. It’s already in my diary.
