How many of us are going to use a Garmin satnav to explore the Western, Eastern fronts as well as the desert , and how many many are bringing a laptop?

From previous years, although a mix of laptops and Sat Navs the majority ran with just Sat Navs.

The most important aspect is the accuracy (or otherwise) of 'distance covered' thus Smart phones are also part of the equipment equation for many. The 'free app' 'Dashboard' does well on the iphone/ipad and doesn't use 'roaming' for its fix.

Guys'Guy, please no not again ....you are all forgetting yourselves remember what we've learnt about the organisers and here you all are asking advice from them, just to remind you all in 2010 they published this photo showing all we should be taking , i got all the way to Calw before they admitted we do not need a palm tree and a flat screen TV.

Scraps the Defender and goes out to organise the removal van. Damn hard finding a 4x4 one though. Suspect Glad to hear someone has a spare room already filled with the kitchen sink and the kitchen cupboards ready to pack. Ours is still scattered from here to the UK

Since our ipad is wifi only and our 'mobile' is two tango cans and 40ft of wet string, we shall be mostly opting for the analog approach - crackerjack map reading and the wrist-breaking odometer trip reset button! Happy days Crying or Very sad

Looking at the instructions on my Garmin, it does have a warning on it in small print that states "Remember , that an empty battery is enough to render your GPS useless. Therefore you should always have additional tools for navigation, like a compass, authorised maps, and be able to use these additional tools". Looks at the likely tulips from the organisers with some trepidation, can these be classified as "authorised maps"?????? and what is a compass.

As for the iphone, ipad etc, what are these? I am still using semiphor for communication affraid

I used a tomtom, and "MotionX GPS" on the iphone last year, was very good and allowed you to record the route, just incase its of use later on Wink

It was easy to use, even as a solo driver at points Mad

On a serious note, we have an ipad and the various apps mentioned but have been put off going the 3G route because of the fear of horrendous roaming charges, particularly when travelling through several countries.

What kind of 3G costs did people rack up last year? Particularly using ipads? Neutral Question

Cheers

lol!

Simon - The 'Dashboard' App for the iPad doesn't use roaming. But your navigational skills of 2010 showed that a Sextant does the job equally well pirat
