France - new law; Speed Camera alerts are banned

Most governments and local authorities agree with us that the TomTom Speed Camera service makes driving safer. At TomTom we comply with (local) legislation and where necessary adapt our practice.

Changes to the law in France

From 4 January 2012 a new law in France makes it illegal to be warned about the location of speed cameras while you are driving. If you have the TomTom Speed Camera service on your device, you are breaking the law if you continue to receive the speed camera warnings and you risk getting a fine.

How to stay within the law

There are two things that you should do:
1. Disable Speed Camera alerts for France on your device.
2. Update your device with the latest Speed Cameras. This will remove the Speed Cameras for France from your device.

To disable:
1. Tap the screen to bring up the Main Menu.
2. Tap TomTom Services.
3. Tap TomTom Safety Cameras.
4. Tap Disable alerts.

Note: If you see the button Enable alerts instead of Disable alerts, speed camera alerts are already disabled.
If the Speed Cameras menu is not available, this means that no speed cameras are currently installed for your map.

Pocket GPS World also have a warning about France

As of 5th January 2012 'Speed Cameras Warnings' are illegal in France.
However, 'Warnings for Dangerous Areas' are legal. The French data is
available as an option in the European database. In the near future we
will be renaming the files to comply with the law.

Not sure their method of renaming from Speed Camera to Dangerous Areas is a viable way round it.
Note also, there is a difference between POIs (i.e database on a GPS) and Detection Equipment (i.e. equipment that recognises the signals generated by speed cameras and sets of an alarm)
