What is ViewRanger?

ViewRanger is fully featured and it will work virtually anywhere in the world using web maps or you can upgrade to topographic premium maps like Ordnance Survey in UK & Ireland and for a growing number of countries. Whichever you use, it will keep working even without a mobile signal, as the maps can be stored on the phone - essential for exploring remote places. You get access to our database of over 10,000 expert guided walking & cycling routes in the UK and you can plan and share trails on your pc using our online community & route planner.

What you need

All you need to use ViewRanger is a compatible mobile phone. It runs on most phones that use either Apple, Android or Symbian operating system (OS), that's a massive range of smartphones. Check if your phone is compatible now.

On Smartphone, On Tablet and Online

With possibly the largest premium topographic map library available (with national map agency topographic charts available for 17 countries), ViewRanger is the only service to make Ordnance Survey GB, IGN France, OS Ireland, OS Northern Ireland, LINZ New Zealand, and BKG Germany topographic charts available on your mobile, your tablet, and to view online. (*online access to premium maps within the my.viewranger site currently limited to OS, OSI, OSNI, IGN, BKG, and LINZ maps).

Nice bit of software.

Now running it on my Iphone 4. Does a lot of what is needed on the rally. On line (free), or downloaded maps (discounted as per Sandy's post above).

Also has an excellent trip computer, which will serve well for use with Tulip diagrams.

Don't forget, if you rely on the on line mapping, you'll need a continuous internet connection - so data roaming charges will apply. If you use the downloaded maps, storage space is needed on your device.

Tracks can be saved for subsequent posting on a website/blog etc... Just need to look at how that can be done with minimal need to go on line. Other apps like this allow for posting direct to a blog, for example, by sending one email straight out of the app. This doesn't seem to be able to do that.

The Viewranger website and community sharing pages are a breeze to use.

I Must admit, having use viewranger on Sandys IPAD when we went laning the other weekend, i went and downloaded it the very next day, a very very good app and so easy to use! great for sharing your routes with everyone, and its that easy im currently doing a laning route round Hertfordshire with it! give us a chance to play :-)
