You won't need to.

Don't think anyone had a problem with getting fuel at garages, supermarkets etc... etc...

Ross - Per Nick's post: No-one had any probs last year re fuel. If you want to carry jerry cans there is no prob from our perspective; but they must not have fuel in them on the ferry crossing.

The only 'difficult' day re fuel is the first day in France - a Sunday. However, we route you via Tescos at Portsmouth to allow filling up prior to the ferry + getting some food supplies for the Sunday (not many places open in Normandy). santa

To be honest, the mileage we did on the first Sunday wasn't a lot, so fuel wasn't an issue.

IF we go through Luxemburg - make sure you are low on fuel - cheapest we found during the trip. Might be worth carrying a can or two, just to fill up with cheap fuel there. Don't forget, though, a 20 litre jerry can of fuel will weigh around 20 kg, so is it worth the extra weight and space taken up.

I won't be carrying any more than a couple of 5 litre cans - just in case. We carried 2 x 20 litre cans last year (between two vehicles) and only used it at the last fill up before the ferry home, so they were empty for the ferry.

Thanks guys. My only worry is I have a 40 litre tank giving me a range of about 150 miles so I guess it will be ok without cans

Cheers

Most of us with newer trucks probably have a range of 300 or more.

With that range, it just means you'll be looking for fuel more often. Probably won't be a problem, but you never know. I'd suggest a 10 or 20 litre can then, or how about fitting a second tank or would it be possible to fit a larger tank out of a later model?? (Don't know much about LRs Shocked ).

It all becomes a balance of kit needed, space available and weight (therefore fuel consumption).

Tend to agree with Nick.

My average range per tank was about 220 miles (4.0L Jeep is thirsty enough without all the extra weight)

We never had a problem finding fuel. I did have two 5 gallon Jerry cans on the roof rack full from the time we first filled up in France. I emptied them into the tank when we got home.

Forgot all about them on the return ferry. Embarassed

Fill up before the start, top off your tanks in Portsmouth and you'll be fine.
